Yu-gi-oh! Monster capsule gb Review

A charming addition to the franchise with welcomed enhancements, but still suffers from pacing issues.

Yu-Gi-Oh! meets Pokémon in this lite, chess-like RPG. Fortunately, updated enhancement modifiers from the Early Days Collection make this an enjoyable deviation from the standards Yu-Gi-Oh! formula, eliminating much of the tedium that plagued the original gameplay. It’s easy to increase your monster’s stats and obliterate enemies, but there’s still enough tactical choices needed with movement and monster choice to be engaging. Unfortunately, the game’s major dungeons still involve a myriad of random encounters that can slow the gameplay down to a screeching halt—the game could have been seriously improved if the updated collection had included an enhancement to mitigate these encounters, so much so that it’s a wonder why it wasn’t included. Beyond that, Monster Capsule GB is a charming addition to the franchise and a return to the classic art style of old-school Pokémon and Zelda games of GameBoy’s past.

This game was included and reviewed as part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection for the Nintendo Switch, using available modifiers.
