Fave Watches of 2024

A list of standout movies watched for the first time in 2024.

It wasn’t until early this year that we finally saw Yorgos Lanthimos’s “controversial” Frankensteinian epic, which is delightful and thought-provoking, with a great performance from Emma Stone.

Poor Things (2023)

Poor Things

Searchlight Pictures

It’s unclear if this movie was rotted from the beginning, or if something went wrong down the assembly line—but who cares! It’s so bad that it’s good. Dakota Johnson doesn’t give a f*ck and thus gives one of the best comedic performances of the year. Who knows how this ended up being released, but boy are we sure glad it did.

madame Web (2024)

Madame Web

Sony Pictures Releasing

It doesn’t quite live up to the promises of it’s impressive marketing campaign, but Longlegs is a moody and atmospheric thriller with some interesting ideas.

Clueless (1995)

A pretty funny nineties romp with some zingers that still hold up.

Clueless

Paramount Pictures

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

It’s songs are lackluster, but del Toro’s venture into stop-motion is a charming adaptation of a classic tale.

Netflix

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

A deceptively simple movie that’s emotionally charged to the brim, with a standout performance by Ann Dowd.

Mass (2021)

Mass

Bleeker Street

It’s refreshing to see a movie about queerness and centering queer characters where the film’s sentiment doesn’t hinge upon their queerness. All of Us Strangers feels like an achievement in that way, with a unique ghostly presence and an eerie sense of atmosphere.

This year’s What The F*ck movie. Campy, sad, gnarly, visceral, and iconic.

The substance (2024)

The Substance

Mubi

One of the most affecting found-footage movies that presents it’s horror and tragedy so authentically; it’s downright scary.

Lake mungo (2008)

Lake Mungo

Arclight Films

“I’ll get you pussy face!” A camp classic that’s a treat to watch.

Serial Mom (1994)

Serial Mom

Savoy Pictures

An almost three-hour-long glitzy musical that’s been marketed to DEATH should not have been this good. Wicked: Part I really captures the “movies are fun again” sentiment coming to head for the past few years.
